How to Clean Glass Shower Doors (and Keep Them Clear)

Cloudy shower glass is almost always one of two things: soap scum (body oils + soap binding to the surface) or hard-water mineral deposits – and Long Island water is hard enough to build the latter quickly. Here’s what actually works.

Routine Cleaning

A 1:1 mix of white vinegar and warm water, sprayed on and left for 10-15 minutes, dissolves light mineral film and soap scum. Wipe with a non-scratch sponge and rinse. For heavier soap scum, a drop of dish soap in the vinegar mix helps cut the oils. Dry the glass afterward – water left to evaporate is what leaves the spots.

For Stubborn Hard-Water Haze

Make a paste of baking soda and water, work it over the glass with a soft cloth, then rinse with the vinegar solution. Commercial hard-water removers work too – check that the label says safe for glass, and keep them off aluminum frames and stone tile, which acids can etch.

What NOT to Use

Skip abrasive powders, steel wool and razor blades on coated or tempered glass – they leave permanent fine scratches that make future buildup worse. Avoid strong acid cleaners on framed doors: they eat the aluminum finish and the rubber seals.

The 10-Second Habit That Beats All of It

A squeegee after every shower removes the water before minerals can deposit. It’s the single biggest difference between glass that stays showroom-clear for years and glass that hazes in months. A daily shower spray is a decent substitute if the squeegee won’t happen.

When Cleaning Won’t Fix It

Glass that stays cloudy after a proper hard-water treatment is usually etched – the minerals have permanently altered the surface, and no cleaner reverses that. At that point your options are professional polishing (sometimes) or new glass.
