Frameless is the look everyone asks for – but it isn’t automatically the right answer for every shower or budget. Here’s the honest breakdown we give customers at our Lynbrook showroom.
The Pros
The look. Thick glass and minimal hardware make the bathroom feel larger and show off tile work instead of hiding it behind aluminum.
Easier cleaning. No frame channels means nowhere for soap scum and mildew to collect. A squeegee after showering keeps frameless glass clear with minimal effort.
Durability. Frameless doors use 3/8″ or 1/2″ tempered glass – substantially heavier than framed glass – hung on solid hinges. There’s less to corrode, pit or discolor over the years.
Custom fit. Frameless work is fabricated to the opening rather than forced into it, so out-of-square showers – most showers, in our experience – get a tight, true fit.
The Cons
Cost. Heavier glass and precision hardware cost more than a framed unit. If the budget is tight, a quality framed or semi-frameless door is a perfectly good shower door.
Water containment. Frameless doors seal with small clear sweeps and precise gaps rather than full frame channels. Correctly fabricated, they don’t leak – but they’re less forgiving of sloppy measurement, which is why fabrication quality matters more, not less, without a frame.
Weight demands solid walls. The hinges carry real load. Walls need proper blocking or solid tile substrate – something we verify before quoting.
The Middle Path: Semi-Frameless
Semi-frameless doors frame the fixed panels but leave the door edge clean – most of the look at a friendlier price. It’s a popular choice for tub doors and rentals.
Our Take
If the walls are sound and the budget allows, frameless is the better long-term door: it looks better, cleans easier, and outlasts framed aluminum. If not, semi-frameless delivers most of the benefit. Either way, the fit is what makes or breaks the door – see how we build custom glass shower doors, or browse all our custom shower door styles.
